Automation of Palletizing in a Food Processing Plant

An Automation & Services project for optimized production

Automation & Services recently completed an automation project in a plant specializing in the processing of potatoes into vacuum-packed fries. The goal was to automate the end of the production line by installing two complete palletizing cells to optimize the packaging and shipment of products. To meet the need for flexibility and maintain an open space, we chose to install two robots. The palletizing had to keep pace with a cycle of 8 bags per minute. Mission accomplished.

Installation of the palletizing cells
The vacuum-packed fries are transported via a hygienic belt conveyor to two palletizing cells. Once inside the cell, the robot, equipped with a vacuum gripper, picks up the bags and places them on pallets according to a pre-programmed pattern. The gripper's foam ensures a reliable grip, even with certain irregularities and deformations in the bags.

Once the pallet is full, it is automatically moved towards the exit by a roller conveyor capable of transporting heavy loads, allowing operators to retrieve it for shipping. Meanwhile, the robot picks up a new pallet from a dedicated rack, ensuring continuous, uninterrupted production.

The entire installation is controlled by an HMI located outside the cell. With its various access levels, operators can issue simple commands, while maintenance staff can access the installation’s settings.

A tailor-made project
Automation & Services managed the design of the cells, the installation of conveyors and racks, as well as the programming of the robots and control systems. One of the major challenges was maintaining a clear passage in the center of the production area, while ensuring efficient robot operation in a confined space.

Thanks to this solution, the plant was able to increase its production rate, reduce operators' workload, and improve the safety and hygiene of the palletizing line.

The added value of Automation & Services
Thanks to its team of engineers and robotic experts, Automation & Services transformed an empty warehouse by designing and implementing two cells perfectly adapted to the client’s requirements. This project mobilized the full range of A&S’s expertise: mechanical engineering, automation, electrical engineering, and robotics. With its experience in the food sector and its cross-sector approach, the team identified the best strategy to develop an optimal solution.

Since every element of the cell is installed, programmed, or designed by Automation & Services teams, no gray areas exist. Our technicians have full mastery of the cell, enabling them to troubleshoot quickly and train operators effectively.

Moreover, the flexibility and commitment to service, key values at Automation & Services, allowed the client to refine their process and configure the HMI according to their preferences. We also provide 24/7 robotic support.

This project clearly illustrates our approach at Automation & Services:

  • Flexible service and solutions
  • Tailor-made offerings
  • A unique combination of our expertise

In summary, if you need a custom palletizing solution that perfectly matches your requirements, Automation & Services handles your entire project.
